The Rise of Deadstock Leather in Today’s Fashion

Emily Jones New York - What is Dead-stock Leather?

Sustainable Fashion: Deadstock Leather

The textile industry as a whole is infamous for leaving a carbon footprint and wasting staggering amounts of material. Here at Emily Jones, we’re dedicated to repurposing and reducing our environmental impact, so let’s talk about one of our newest materials: deadstock leather!

What Is Deadstock Material?

It’s quite simple really. Certain instances like overproduction, small imperfections, canceled orders, and changing plans can all lead fashion designers and textile manufacturers to have an excessive amount of unused material, called deadstock.

Despite the fact that it has never been used, this surplus of fabric would ordinarily end up in landfills, adding on to the economy’s waste and pollution. Instead, designers and manufacturers can choose to repurpose deadstock materials to create something both sustainable and unique.

Why Is This A Sustainable Option..

  • It limits textile waste.

  • The already overwhelming amount of textile waste in the fashion industry is continuing to grow, and that excess fabric is rarely repurposed. According to State of Matter, “recent reports indicate that less than 1% of the fabric used in clothing production is effectively recycled for the creation of new apparel.”

By creating with deadstock leather, we can contribute to improving this percentage, and keep extra material out of landfills.

  • It reduces new material production.

  • One of the important benefits of deadstock leather is that it reduces the need to produce more material, which requires more labor and limited resources. The fashion industry already uses a massive amount of limited resources and leaves behind a frightening carbon footprint.

Why keep producing more material when large amounts of new, perfectly good fabric are constantly going to waste?

  • It benefits the environment.

  • Every year, fashion designers and textile manufacturers continue to use limited resources like water to produce more material, discarding their unused surplus. This excess ends up in landfills and contributes to pollution.

By recycling deadstock leather, we can reduce our carbon footprint and work toward a positive environmental impact.
